About Us


ZiP Diagnostics is an Australian owned, Melbourne based biotech company that has developed simple, economical solutions for infectious disease diagnostics.

Building on several years of assay research, the company was launched in 2019 to meet global diagnostic needs and to provide a domestic capability for pandemic protection in Australia. 


ZiP has its Melbourne headquarters, and laboratory and production facilities in Collingwood, Victoria. All significant components of the test system are domestically produced including instruments, cartridge and assay chemistry.  


ZiP has an experienced scientific development group and a qualified production and commercialisation team. The company is focused on providing a SARS-CoVx diagnostic product for government, commercial and healthcare applications in Australia.

ZiP Diagnostics leverages strong collaborative partnerships in both industry and the research community. 


The company works closely with Axxin, Victorian Infectious Diseases Reference Laboratory (VIDRL), Royal Melbourne Hospital, Doherty Institute, Burnet Institute, CSIRO and the Geneva-based Foundation of Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND). 

Leadership Team

Associate Professor Dr Jack Richards is co-founder and a director of ZiP Diagnostics. Jack has been an infectious diseases physician at Royal Melbourne Hospital for 17 years and laboratory head at Burnet Institute for eight years. He holds a four-year Medical Research Future Fund career development fellowship (industry) that commenced in 2019. Jack is a chief investigator on two current National Health and Medical Research Council development grants and a peer-review panel member. He is an assessor for the World Health Organization pre-qualification team for malaria diagnostics and a co-inventor on five Australian and international patents.

Bill Hopper, Technical Director

Bill is co-founder and a director of ZiP Diagnostics. Bill is a highly successful engineer, innovator and entrepreneur, he has developed a number of successful technology businesses over the last 35 years. In 2007 he founded Axxin, a global provider of state-of-the-art point-of-care molecular diagnostic test instruments. Bill’s hands-on approach to problem solving in the diagnostics industry has led to the commercial release of over 50 innovative products and the generation of hundreds of millions of dollars in export revenue.

Blair Healy, Executive Director

Blair has over 30 years experience working in executive management roles for local and international technology companies, including Fujitsu and Nortel Networks, which included 4 years of overseas assignments in Singapore and South Korea. On returning to Australia in 2000, he became CEO of ASX listed technology company KUSP and then Innovonics. Blair co-founded Cogent Energy, a low carbon co-generation energy company which was acquired by Origin Energy. Blair is a graduate of Royal Military College Duntroon, BE Elec (Hons) UNSW and served in command and technical roles in the Australian Army for 13 years. Blair joined Zip Diagnostics to manage the marketing and business development functions.
